  • Time to get noticed

This whole year has been great.  I spent a lot of time learning about photography so that I can take my images to a higher level. Although I can never achieve perfection in my images, I’m at a point where I can be competitive in this fierce market.  It’s time to advertise.

Dallas have this magazine called D Weddings (can’t direct link to it, but it’s on the left, half way down), and one of my goal was to advertise in it.  Sure, anyone can plop down a chunk of money and be in the magazine.  The requirement for me was that I must be at the top of my game, both in business and in imagery.  I’m really nervous and excited about this b/c my work will now be compare to other great photographers in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.  The public will now decide if my work are worth their investment.  I’ll find out when the issue hit newstands in December.

This is my full page ad that I designed.  Two things that bother me are the logo and the baby blue color on my contact info.  I went with baby blue b/c it ties in with my website, even though it might be hard to read.  And I think the logo might be too small relative to a full size 8×10 page.  Let me know what you guys think, the deadline is next Wednesday.

    *** UPDATE ***
Thank you so much to everyone for their thoughtful criticisms.  It really mean a lot to me when you took the time out of your busy day to try and help.  From all your criticisms, I present you… version 2.

  • I really like the ad, but your picture is almost too muted, and the font you’ve chosen makes
it look slightly juvenile (I run a marketing company in my spare time, sorry for being so harsh!).

REALLY love the image on the top left though… SO nice.

  • Hmm…you’re definitely right about the baby blue font. Not sure if I like the font either. You might not need sucha big photo of yourself and instead make it landscape and add some text about yourself and your approach to taking fabulous photos!

  • Take the photo of yourself out…..no one cares in an add, they want to see what you do.  Also, the second photograph (bride pulling dress) although telling a story isn’t flattering.  When advertising to the masses no one wants to see the truth, they want to see skinny, glamourous, heartfelt, beautiful and georgeous.  Reserve this photograph for your website but not as a first impression.  Same with the photograph of yourself.  Good luck.

  • BTW, the other two images are perfect.  You might think about adding a photograph that isn’t processed with BW or the antique look.  You have several images that are stunning that aren’t processed in PS.  Many people love both styles of photography, show how versatile you are in the add.  The contact information should pop.

  • these are very nice! yah second shooting is always fun but i like being the main because i have more control too hahahah

  • Jason, congrats on going public soon.  Now, my two cents on your advertisement page: I think you should add some of the images you’ve captured without people as the subjects; you had some really nice shots of glassware, reception centerpieces, and just the glory of the atmosphere.  Including such images will capture your versatility and your close attention to details.  You should also have photos in a variety of styles–black & white (I agree with jenpechan’s comment; it is candid, though not too flattering for the bride), pictures in motion (birds flying, bouquets in the air), maybe of one where the groom is included & the bride & groom’s love is undeniably exuded, & shots at unique angles.  Show ‘em what you’ve got, buddy!  Also, if the other comments still have not pushed you to change your font & color…I sincerely urge you to seriously consider doing so.  Make it stylish, modern, & darkly bold; perhaps you want an emblem or mark that will be your signature mark one day included as well.  Last, as studly as you are in person, you should let your patrons figure that out when they meet you.  That will be an added bonus! ; )  With that said, take your photo out, especially if you did not take it.  Afterall, the page ought to display your photography skills.

Good luck, Jason.  Hope to see ya in November!      ~Bei

  • Wow! those are harsh comments… I love it! you gave me insight into ideas that I didn’t have before. Thank you so much!

  • hi jason, i just saw this entry, so i didn’t get to comment, but when i saw the first version and then the second version, i saw a vast improvement! great job. and i look forward to seeing how your business progresses with this new ad. keep us posted.

  • Great job with the updated one…

  • why you stealing my woman for your promotional material?!?! hahah. Your slide looks great. Hope that ad brings in the business big time! I’m still trying to figure out a place to advertise.

  • love the edited one :)

  • version 2 works a lot better!!

  • I like the fonts/color of version 2. However, as a female I can’t help but notice in the bottom pic, the model’s right arm is too big compared to her left arm, sooooo not flattering. Perhaps you should consider posting something that would express emotion/story instead of just plain beauty which is so overrated in this industry.

  • Version 2 is much better!!  Love the variation in photographs!!

  • hey jason, just dropping in to say hi!! hope your ad goes well!
